Can collagen help fix my sleep schedule?

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably tried everything you can think of in your quest for a better night’s sleep. But have you considered taking a collagen supplement? More known for its hair strengthening and age-defying results, collagen can also help you reverse unhealthy sleeping patterns. Don’t believe us? Our experts at Kollo Health have compiled this blog post to help you understand the relationship between sleep and collagen.

What is collagen?

To be able to understand the effects of collagen on your sleep, it's important to know what collagen actually is. First and most foremost, collagen is a protein that is found in the connective tissues of your body. As you get older, this source of collagen decreases, so it becomes necessary to replenish it via supplements. One of the biggest benefits of collagen is that it produces glycine. Glycine is an amino acid (a building block for protein) and plays a vital part in helping us to get a good night’s sleep.

How does glycine help us fall asleep?

When you fall asleep, your hypothalamus (the part of the brain which controls homeostasis, which is responsible for controlling the body’s temperature) cools your body down (it lowers it by around 0.5 degrees Celsius on average). It's far easier to fall asleep when it's colder, as this replication induces somnolence.

Therefore, because collagen contains glycine, ingesting it can help you to fall asleep much faster. This hit of glycine will lower your body temperature, tricking your body into thinking that it's time to rest.

How should I use collagen in my daily routine?

It’s much easier than many people realise to incorporate collagen into your daily routine. Simply add around two spoonfuls of collagen (approx. 3g of glycine) into a glass of water, a smoothie, or even some soup and swirl it around before you ingest.
