Does your hair need a boost? Collagen could be the solution

While our bodies naturally produce a certain amount of collagen, as we age the level we produce begins to decrease and can impact us in several ways, from sagging skin and wrinkles to brittle nails and thinning hair. If you’re concerned about the condition of your hair, here’s why Kollo’s liquid marine collagen supplement could be the solution to give your hair a boost.

Keratin

Hair is made up primarily of the protein Keratin, which enables hair growth, strength and elasticity. To build this protein, our bodies use several amino acids, some of which can be found in collagen. When consuming a collagen supplement, your body breaks it down into amino acids which it then uses to build new proteins and compounds, potentially providing the tools needed to create healthy hair.

Free radicals

Due to many environmental factors, diet, stress and air pollutants, over time our bodies develop free radicals, which can have a negative impact on our cells, proteins and hair follicles. To stop free radicals in their tracks, our body needs antioxidants – research has shown that marine collagen may have antioxidant activity, which can fight the free radicals and prevent damage to your follicles.

Grey hair

Free radicals can also play a part in the colour of your hair. As we age, the cells that provide melanin – the pigment that gives our hair its colour, begin to die. While this is a natural process, it is believed that free radicals can speed up the damage to those cells. With the antioxidants present in collagen, they may reduce the damage to cells that produce melanin, in turn, preventing the appearance of those unwelcome premature grey hairs, or at least slowing down the process.

Dermis strength

Collagen is the star of the show when it comes to our dermis, which is the middle layer of skin containing the roots of each individual hair, accounting for up to 70% of its weight. With age, the body is less able to produce the same levels of collagen to replenish cells in the dermis – a marine collagen supplement can help to maintain the level of collagen required for those cells and contribute to better hair growth and reduced thinning.
