The secret of marine collagen

It’s a popular phrase used in skincare and usually adorns the adverts for the latest line of age-reducing skin products, but there’s a lot you might not know about collagen and its sibling, marine collagen. It’s a generally known fact among skincare aficionados that collagen stimulation and production in the skin begins to decrease as you get older, decreasing the elasticity of the skin and increasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But what are the facts about marine collagen – and how could it transform your skin for the better? Read on to find out.

Marine collagen is collagen sourced from marine life, as opposed to collagen proteins found or sourced in humans or bovine. Collagen itself is a protein that naturally occurs within the body and helps to plump and smooth out the skin, giving it a more youthful look overall. It also helps the body with its natural regeneration process, particularly when it comes to the integral tissues around the body which can become damaged over time, like bones, tendons and ligaments. Marine collagen specifically is often found in something called collagen peptides, which are a processed form of naturally occurring collagen that are more easily digestible by humans. Whilst the body does continue to produce collagen throughout our lives, as we age, the process slows down and it shows not only in our skin but in the movement of our joints and the repairing process of the body.

So why is marine collagen the best external source of collagen for our bodies? Its main selling point is that it’s constructed of tiny molecules which absorb more quickly into the skin than traditional collagen supplements. These help the body utilise the collagen more efficiently and enter the bloodstream at a quicker rate. This type of collagen also contains a high number of essential amino acids that contribute towards healthy body functions, particularly helping to build muscle and regulate glucose production as well as stimulating the natural collagen production that the body already creates.

It seems like a no-brainer: making marine collagen a part of your daily routine might just be the secret to smoother skin and a healthier, better functioning body in the long term.
