Are collagen supplements sustainable? Kollo has the answer

Sustainability is a key concern in the modern world. There have been revelations about the damage being done to our planet by unsustainable practices. Since the industrial revolution, humans have been decimating resources and harming nature at an alarming rate. Now, people expect companies to show the efforts they are making to amend this. But are collagen supplements sustainable?

Well, this depends on a number of factors. In this post, we are going to take you through the efforts Kollo makes for sustainability. We have a strong sustainability policy and we’d like to share that with you.

Kollo: how are collagen supplements sustainable?

The Kollo sustainability policy revolves around three key factors:

  • Traceability

  • Durability

  • Responsibility

These principles go right back to the sourcing of the collagen itself. As you may know, Kollo contains 10g of premium-grade marine collagen peptides. This means the collagen in our supplement comes from the skin and scales of fish. We use Naticol collagen, which has a strong reputation for quality. Their commitment to ethical practices and sustainability mirrors our own.

The first thing to understand is that the origin of marine collagen is sustainable. Though it comes from the bodies of animals, those animals are not slaughtered specifically for their collagen. The parts we extract the collagen from, like scales and skin, are by-products of the meat industry. The farming and slaughtering of these animals is primarily to produce food. We source our collagen from parts that don’t go into the food industry.

Now, let’s look at the specific commitments in more detail.

Traceability

Aquaculture-farmed fish are the source of Naticol marine collagen. Aquaculture is a process for cultivating aquatic animals for human consumption. It happens in ocean waters, freshwater and even in tanks. Farmed fish are more sustainable than wild-caught fish. This is because the methods used for catching fish in the wild are harmful to ocean habitats. Moreover, they are decimating wild marine animal populations. Aquaculture is a very sustainable practice and it also uses minimal chemicals. This means minimal damage to surrounding habitats and also no contamination of the meat.

The suppliers of the fish used in Naticol marine collagen are ASC- and BAP-certified. This stands for Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Best Aquaculture Practices. Moreover, they are EU approved and rigorously audited by the creators of Naticol. This amounts to a high level of trust in the ethics and sustainability of the aquaculture farms in question. The commitment is to a low carbon footprint and protection of natural resources.

Naticol has recently earned Friends Of The Sea certification as well. This is the preeminent certification standard for products and services contributing to the protection of marine environments. This is another proud achievement for the sustainability of Naticol marine collagen peptides.

Did you know that aquaculture farming causes around 7 times less greenhouse gas emissions than other types of farming like cattle?

This is a key part of why we chose marine collagen for Kollo. Aside from the benefits to your health, the practices involved are very sustainable. This means better protection for our environment – something that we are not prepared to compromise on.

Durability

When we say ‘durability’, this is closely linked to the question ‘are collagen supplements sustainable?’ It’s all about what we do to ensure the processes that follow the aquaculture are sustainable. It also focuses on ethical practices, inclusivity and commitments to society.

We add value to the raw materials. Hydrolysis is used to break down the collagen molecules into collagen peptides. These are easier for the body to digest, ensuring very little of the collagen goes to waste. Consequently, Kollo delivers maximum benefits and also ensures very little of the collagen content passes through the digestive system without being absorbed.

Zero waste

This is a key concept for us. In addition to the above, we ensure there is no waste from the processes of creating our supplement. Materials like the pulp that remains after extracting the collagen are recycled for the production of biofuels and compost. Every batch of Kollo is carefully produced to ensure minimal water consumption and maximum usage of the raw materials.

We even go the extra mile to ensure all our packaging is recyclable. We always use appropriate-sized packaging. The cardboard that Kollo is shipped in can be easily recycled at the kerbside. Furthermore, you can send the Kollo sachets back to us to be recycled. We leave no stone unturned in finding opportunities to reduce our waste footprint. This also contributes to a commitment to maintaining a circular economy with our product.

Social and economic commitments

We have already discussed how we aim to be environmentally friendly with Kollo. Sustainable practices, zero waste and minimal carbon emissions are central to our policy. But we also aim to be as socially responsible as possible as well. Production of Naticol takes place in the EU and we produce Kollo in the UK. As such, strict rules about fair pay and human slavery are at the heart of production. There is no exploitation in our supply chain.

Naticol also has certain certifications that demonstrate its social standing. The product is certified both Halal and Kosher. This shows a commitment to recognising the needs of different cultures and faiths. It also shows the inclusivity at the core of our mission. We want everyone to be able to benefit from Kollo. Good health is something that relates to us all, transcending social barriers like race and gender.

Beyond this, Naticol has RSE and FSSC 22000 certifications. These are all about social responsibility relating to the production of food and food supplements. And we have worked hard to earn ‘Informed Sport’ certification. This tests every batch we produce to ensure it is safe for consumption by competing athletes.

By subscribing to these commitments, we demonstrate our answer to the question ‘are collagen supplements sustainable?’

Responsibility

At Kollo, we recognise the trust that our customers put in us to deliver a safe, high-quality product. In fact, quality is the absolute focus of Kollo marine collagen supplements. We make every effort to ensure that we provide the highest purity in our collagen. It is natural and safe, with superior integrity and a unique manufacturing process.

Enzymatic hydrolysis is the key to this. Chemicals can contaminate and damage the collagen, but enzymes break it down without any of these risks. Moreover, the storage and shipping of the raw materials is handled carefully. The collagen is never irradiated and adheres to strict timescales for shipping and production of the end product.

The science is there to prove the efficacy of Naticol marine collagen. This translates into a powerful collagen supplement in Kollo. We also add other nutrients in the form of B vitamins, vitamin C and l-lysine to our formula. This maximises its health benefits and increases your body’s ability to synthesise new collagen. Benefits include:

  • Healthier, younger-looking skin

  • Stronger hair and nails

  • Reduced swelling and discomfort in joints

  • Improved bone density

  • Greater muscle gains

  • A healthy gut

The collagen peptides are bioactive and bioavailable, meaning your body can easily absorb them. Once in the bloodstream, they work quickly to stimulate collagen production. Naticol is patented, so you can rest assured there is no other collagen product like it. The same goes for Kollo – we are unique in this market. This has earned us many industry awards, features in magazines and television and over 2,000 5-star customer reviews.

So are collagen supplements sustainable?

We can’t speak for other brands, but we know that Kollo is very sustainable. We work hard at every step to ensure traceability, durability and responsibility. This amounts to a comprehensive sustainability policy that covers:

  • Protecting habitats

  • Low carbon emissions

  • Zero waste

  • A circular economy

  • Inclusivity

  • Social responsibility

  • A commitment to our customers

Sustainability is a key concern for us as a modern, forward-thinking and compassionate company. Kollo remains committed to these principles and supports our customers’ efforts to help the planet as well as to improve their health.

The final piece of the puzzle for our sustainability commitment is that we work hard to inform. We advocate for a pro-collagen lifestyle, meaning we encourage our customers to do all they can for their health. Kollo marine collagen supplements are a part of this. But our blog is full of information about the other things you can do. We want to be honest with our audience and enable them to educate themselves to live their best life.
