How marine collagen could help fight against menopause

Menopause is an inevitable part of ageing, but knowing this doesn’t make it any easier. Symptoms such as hot flushes, dry and thinning hair, night sweats, and joint pain are only a handful of what to expect as menopause creeps in. Some women may look to treatment to help reduce the severity of these symptoms and GPs may offer options such as hormone replacement therapy. While these can be effective, negative side effects can often put women off. Alternative holistic treatments such as mindfulness, meditation and yoga are also recommended, especially when it comes to mood swings, anxiety, and depression.

However, did you know that some of the symptoms of menopause are a result of depleted collagen levels in the body? Menopause reduces our oestrogen production, and oestrogen is the trigger for collagen production. Here's how marine collagen supplements can reduce the symptoms of menopause:

Joint pain

Collagen is the building block that makes up connective tissue - the tissue around your bones and joints that supports them and gives them their elasticity. When collagen levels decline during menopause, your joints become less protected and this can cause achiness and inflammation. Supplementing with collagen is a great way to keep the connective tissue strong and stable.

Thinning hair

During menopause, the reduction of collagen causes the dermal layer in the scalp (where the hair follicles lie) to weaken. This can result in the dermal layer being less able to nourish the hair follicles, so the hair is weaker and more brittle. Collagen supplements can revitalise the dermal layer and get the follicles back to their healthier and happier form.

Bone density

Collagen is one of the primary components that makes up bone tissue. Like cartilage, bones weaken during menopause, which can result in osteoporosis, a condition which increases the risk of bones fracturing due to low bone density. Supplementing with collagen can reduce this risk as the bones have more building blocks to be able to repair and recover.
