Bone & Joint Health Supplements
The short answer
Kollo's joint range combines two things: Flex+, a dual-capsule supplement built on AprèsFlex® Boswellia serrata extract and Univestin®, two clinically studied botanical ingredients, and Kollo Marine Collagen, which provides 10,000mg of Naticol® 4000 collagen peptides, the amino acids the body uses to maintain cartilage, tendons and ligaments. They can be taken separately or together as a bundle. Made in the UK.
Joint supplements: frequently asked questions
What supplements help with joint pain?
The ingredients with the most human evidence for joint comfort are Boswellia serrata extracts, hydrolysed collagen peptides, and omega-3. Kollo Flex+ combines AprèsFlex® Boswellia with Univestin®; Kollo Marine Collagen provides 10,000mg of collagen peptides. Our complete guide to joint pain supplements goes through the evidence for each.
Does collagen help joint pain?
Hydrolysed collagen peptides provide glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, the amino acids that make up cartilage, tendon and ligament tissue. Several studies in active adults and people with joint discomfort have reported improvements in joint comfort with 5g to 10g of collagen peptides a day over 12 to 24 weeks. It supports the tissue rather than treating a condition. See what type of collagen is best for joint pain.
What is in Kollo Flex+?
Flex+ is a dual-capsule supplement. One capsule contains AprèsFlex® Boswellia serrata extract, standardised for AKBA, the compound studied for joint comfort; the other contains Univestin®, a blend of Scutellaria baicalensis and Acacia catechu extracts. Both ingredients have published clinical studies. Read the guide to Boswellia supplements.
Can I take Flex+ and collagen together?
Yes. They work differently - Flex+ supplies botanical extracts studied for joint comfort, collagen supplies the building blocks of joint tissue - so they are often taken together. Kollo sells them as a bundle for that reason.
How long do joint supplements take to work?
It varies by ingredient. Boswellia extracts have shown effects within the first few weeks in studies; collagen peptides typically take 8 to 16 weeks of daily use to show a difference in joint comfort. Take both every day for at least 12 weeks before judging.
Can I take joint supplements with medication?
If you take blood thinners, anti-inflammatories, or any prescription medication, check with your GP or pharmacist before starting Flex+ or collagen. Boswellia may interact with some medicines. See do collagen supplements interact with medications.
Is type I or type II collagen better for joints?
Type II collagen is the collagen in cartilage, and small doses of undenatured type II are studied for joint comfort. Hydrolysed type I marine collagen, as in Kollo, is studied at larger doses (5g to 10g) and supplies the amino acids used across cartilage, tendons, ligaments and skin. Our guide to collagen for joint pain compares them.
Who should not take Flex+?
Flex+ is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Anyone with a medical condition or taking medication should speak to their GP first. Marine collagen is not suitable for anyone with a fish allergy.
