Marine collagen: frequently asked questions

What is marine collagen?

Marine collagen is hydrolysed type I collagen sourced from fish skin. It is broken down into small peptides so the body can absorb them easily. Type I is the most abundant collagen in skin, hair, nails, bones and connective tissue, which is why marine collagen is the source most often used in skin and hair studies.

What makes Kollo different from other marine collagen brands?

Kollo delivers 10,000mg of Naticol® 4000 marine collagen per serving, the dose used in Naticol's published human studies, with 100% RDA vitamin C. The liquid sachet also contains B1, B5, B6, B12 and L-lysine. Every product is made in the UK, Informed Choice certified (independently batch-tested for banned substances and contaminants), sugar-free and Friends of the Sea certified. See how Kollo compares on our liquid collagen comparison and collagen powder comparison.

Marine collagen vs bovine collagen - which is better?

Marine collagen is almost entirely type I, has a smaller average peptide size, and contains no mammalian proteins, which suits people who avoid beef or pork. Bovine collagen provides types I and III and is usually cheaper. Most skin hydration and elasticity studies used marine collagen. Our marine vs bovine collagen guide goes through the evidence.

Should I choose liquid or powder?

Both Kollo formats deliver 10,000mg of the same Naticol® 4000 collagen. The liquid sachet is ready to drink and includes B vitamins and L-lysine; the powder is unflavoured with no sweeteners and mixes into coffee, smoothies or porridge. Pick the one you will take every day. Our liquid vs powder guide has more detail.

How much marine collagen should I take a day?

Clinical studies on skin, hair and joint outcomes used 2.5g to 10g a day, with the most consistent results at 10g over 8 to 12 weeks. Every Kollo serving provides 10,000mg. Read our guide to how much collagen per day.

How long until marine collagen starts working?

Most people notice changes in skin hydration and nail strength within 4 to 8 weeks of daily use, with joint comfort and hair typically taking 8 to 16 weeks. Taking it every day matters more than the time of day. See our results timeline.

Can I take marine collagen during menopause?

Yes. Collagen loss speeds up as oestrogen falls, which is why skin, hair and joints often change during perimenopause and menopause. Many customers take Kollo marine collagen alongside Balance+, our menopause formula. If you are on HRT or other medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.

Is marine collagen safe? Are there any side effects?

Marine collagen is considered safe for most adults at the recommended dose. Mild digestive discomfort is uncommon and usually settles within a few days. Kollo marine collagen is Informed Choice certified and tested for heavy metals, allergens and purity. It is not suitable for anyone with a fish allergy. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking prescription medication, speak to your GP before use.
