The UK vitamin D market has dozens of products at a wide range of prices and quality levels, and choosing between them genuinely matters here: the UK's northerly latitude means our skin can't make meaningful vitamin D from sunlight for roughly half the year. According to government figures, around 1 in 6 adults and almost 20% of children in the UK have vitamin D levels lower than government recommendations. Here's what actually matters when choosing a supplement, and, just as importantly, what's marketing noise.

D3, not D2: the form matters

There are two supplemental forms of vitamin D: D3 (cholecalciferol) and D2 (ergocalciferol). D3 is the form your body makes from sunlight, and the research is clear that D3 is more effective than D2 as a supplement at raising and maintaining your vitamin D levels. This one is simple: choose vitamin D3.

What makes a good vitamin D3 supplement?

1. The right dose for you

The NHS advises that adults consider a daily supplement of 10 micrograms (400 IU), particularly from October to March when UK sunlight can't do the job. That's the baseline for maintaining healthy levels in the general population.

Higher doses, commonly 1,000 to 4,000 IU, are widely used where levels need more support, but correcting a suspected deficiency shouldn't be guesswork: if you think your levels are low, the right move is to speak to your GP or a health professional, ideally with a blood test, so the dose matches your actual need.

2. Format: pick the one you'll actually take

Here's where we'll be more honest than most supplement brands. Randomised controlled trials, our best level of evidence, have directly compared sprays and liquids with capsules, including a wintertime randomised crossover study in healthy adults, and found no significant difference in how well they raise blood vitamin D levels. Sprays, capsules and tablets all work.

So why choose a spray? Convenience and preference. A spray is quick, pleasant, easy to remember, and a genuinely good option if you dislike swallowing tablets, as plenty of people do. The best format is simply the one you'll take consistently every day, because with vitamin D it's the D3 and the dose that matter, not the delivery method.

3. Vitamin K2 alongside D3

Vitamin D3 supports calcium absorption, and vitamin K2 plays a complementary role in how the body handles that calcium, with research exploring the two nutrients' synergy, particularly for bone health. Many practitioners consider a combined D3 and K2 formula sensible at higher D3 doses. If K2 is included, MK-7 is the well-studied form to look for.

4. Clean formulation

A good vitamin D3 supplement doesn't need a long ingredients list. Look for D3 alone or D3 with K2, without unnecessary fillers, binders or artificial additives.

5. Year-round consistency

Many people supplement through winter and stop in summer. But between cloud cover, indoor working and (rightly) wearing sunscreen, reliable summer sun exposure isn't a given for most UK adults, which is part of why deficiency remains so common here. A maintenance dose year round is practical and safe for most healthy adults, and consistency beats seasonal good intentions.

How much vitamin D3 is too much?

Vitamin D toxicity (hypervitaminosis D) can occur at very high doses over extended periods, though it's rare from supplements used sensibly. UK guidance sets the upper level at 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) daily for adults: don't exceed this on your own initiative. Doses above 4,000 IU should only ever be taken on the recommendation of a health professional, with blood level monitoring.

Vitamin D deserves particular attention for women through perimenopause and menopause, when bone health is under pressure from declining oestrogen. For the full picture, read our guide to vitamin D and menopause, and for how vitamin D fits into a complete routine, our guide to the best supplements for women over 40.

Before you start Food supplements shouldn't replace a varied, balanced diet. Don't exceed 4,000 IU daily without professional advice, and if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, take regular medication, or have a diagnosed health condition, speak to your GP before starting any new supplement. If you suspect you're deficient, ask your GP about testing rather than self-treating.
