Will Collagen Help with Acne?

When it comes to helping our skin look its best with collagen supplements, the focus tends to be on anti-ageing. But what about other skin concerns? In this post we take an honest look at the question: will collagen help with acne?

The Short Answer There are currently no robust clinical studies on oral collagen supplementation specifically for acne — most of the existing research in this area is on topical collagen creams, not supplements taken by mouth. What collagen can support is the skin's natural wound healing process, which may be helpful when breakouts do occur. Collagen will not regulate sebum, kill acne-causing bacteria, or prevent new breakouts forming.

How Does Collagen Impact Acne?

Collagen plays a role in the wound healing process. The thinking is that if the skin's key structural protein is in good supply, the skin may have an easier time recovering from damage without scarring.

Whenever we develop a pimple, we essentially develop a small wound, regardless of whether we squeeze the spot or leave it alone. Pimples are caused by bacteria growing inside clogged pores, creating an infection that leads to swelling and inflammation. When the skin is injured in this way, it needs time to heal, and that healing process can sometimes leave scars behind.

Because collagen is one of the main building blocks the skin uses to repair itself, it's reasonable to think that supporting collagen status may help the skin recover from breakouts. The honest caveat is that most of the direct research has looked at topical collagen, not oral supplementation, so this remains an area where evidence is still building.

Benefits of Marine Collagen for Acne-Prone Skin

Collagen is not going to clear acne — it doesn't affect sebum production or the bacteria on the surface of the skin. Where it may offer some support is around how the skin recovers after a breakout has happened.

Faster Wound Healing

Research on collagen peptides and skin repair suggests they may support the body's natural wound healing pathways. A 2024 review outlines how collagen peptides interact with skin repair processes. While this isn't specific to acne wounds, the mechanism is the same one the skin uses to heal damage from breakouts.

Reduced Scarring

Acne scarring occurs when the healing process doesn't proceed optimally. Collagen provides part of the structural framework the skin needs to repair itself smoothly, so making sure the body has what it needs to make collagen may, in theory, reduce the likelihood of deep scarring or pitted marks from breakouts. Direct human trials on collagen supplements and acne scarring specifically are limited, so treat this as a plausible support rather than a guaranteed outcome.

The Role of Vitamin C in Acne and Collagen

Vitamin C has a well-established role in collagen synthesis — without adequate vitamin C, the body cannot produce collagen effectively. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that may help with redness and irritation associated with acne-prone skin.

Kollo Premium Liquid Marine Collagen contains 10,000mg of Naticol® marine collagen peptides alongside vitamin C and a B vitamin complex (B1, B5, B6, B12) plus l-lysine, so the collagen and the co-factors needed to use it are delivered together in one daily sachet.

Building a Wider Skincare Routine

Collagen supplementation works best as one part of a wider approach to managing acne-prone skin. The following sit alongside (not instead of) any medical or dermatological advice you've been given:

  • Develop a consistent skincare routine with products suited to acne-prone skin
  • Cleanse gently twice daily without over-stripping the skin
  • Use non-comedogenic (non-pore-blocking) moisturisers and makeup
  • Consider topical treatments recommended by your GP or pharmacist, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or prescription retinoids
  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced, varied diet
  • Manage stress and get enough sleep — both have well-documented effects on skin

What Results Can You Expect?

It's important to set realistic expectations. Oral collagen will not clear active breakouts, and the direct evidence for supplement-driven improvements in acne scarring is limited. Where it may help, those changes tend to build slowly over months rather than days, in line with the skin's natural cell turnover and repair cycle.

Some Kollo customers have shared before and after photos after several months of consistent supplementation. These are individual experiences and not a substitute for clinical evidence.

When to See a Dermatologist

If you're experiencing severe, persistent or cystic acne, please consult a GP or dermatologist. Collagen supplements are not a replacement for medical treatment. Your healthcare provider can assess whether prescription options — oral antibiotics, hormonal therapy or isotretinoin — would be appropriate. A collagen supplement can sit alongside medical treatment, but it should never replace it.

Kollo Premium Liquid Marine Collagen provides 10,000mg of Naticol® marine collagen peptides plus vitamin C, B vitamins (B1, B5, B6, B12) and l-lysine in one daily sachet — designed to support skin, joints and overall wellbeing.
